ChatGPT usually recommends your competitor because more websites, directories and reviews talk about them. To outrank competitors in AI search, measure who gets named for your customers' questions, get present in those same sources, and answer the questions directly on your site. There is no fixed "number one" — what counts is how often a brand is recommended.

In this article:

  • a free way to check how visible your competitor is in ChatGPT and Google AI answers;
  • why AI recommends them, according to published research;
  • 6 steps to get ahead, and what not to do.

What does "being ahead" in AI search mean?

Being ahead means your brand is mentioned more often than your competitor in answers to customer questions. There are no fixed positions as in Google, because AI builds the answer from scratch each time.

In November–December 2025, SparkToro and Gumshoe.ai ran 12 recommendation prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI nearly 3,000 times in total. The result: the same list of brands came back in fewer than 1 in 100 runs, and the same list in the same order even less often. At the same time, some brands kept appearing in a large share of answers. That is why the authors of the study recommend measuring share of visibility, not "position". The research is not peer-reviewed and was run with a company that sells an AI tracking tool, which is worth keeping in mind.

The practical takeaway: one screenshot proves nothing. "ChatGPT showed us first" describes a single run.

How do you check a competitor's visibility in AI answers?

Write down your customers' questions, run each one several times, and log the results in a table. You do not need a paid tool for this.

  1. Write 10–15 questions. No brand names: "recommend a dental clinic in Tashkent", "which CRM is best for a training center". Use the language your customers write in, with each language tested separately.
  2. Run every question at least 5 times. Start a new chat each time: in ChatGPT, in Google's AI answers, and in any other tool your audience uses.
  3. Record two things: which brands were named and which websites the answer linked to.
  4. Calculate the share: answers that mention the brand ÷ total answers.

Sample table (the numbers only illustrate the calculation and are not a real measurement):

BrandAppeared in how many of 50 answersShare of visibility
Competitor A3162%
Competitor B1836%
Your brand612%

The list of linked websites is the most valuable part. It shows where AI gets its information about your competitor, and it becomes your work plan in step 4.

Which AI tools should you check in Uzbekistan?

At least two: ChatGPT and Google's AI answers; if your customers use Yandex, add Alice AI as well. According to StatCounter, Google accounted for 76.31% of search in Uzbekistan in September 2026 and Yandex for 21.45%. StatCounter. These are search engine shares, not AI chat usage figures — but when one search in five goes through Yandex, ignoring it is a mistake.

Yandex makes this easier: in April 2026, Yandex Webmaster added a "Site visibility in Alice AI" section. It shows your site's share among the sources of Alice's answers, the queries where your site appears, and the competitors in your topic that appear more often. Yandex Webmaster blog (in Russian). The section opens once you verify ownership of the site.

Ask the questions in the language your customer writes in. Answers and the brands named can differ between Uzbek and Russian, so keep two separate tables.

Why does AI recommend your competitor?

In most cases the reason is not your competitor's website but what is written about them elsewhere on the internet. In December 2025, Ahrefs analyzed 75,000 brands and measured which metrics are linked to visibility in AI answers. Study results:

MetricChatGPTGoogle AI ModeAI Overviews
Brand mentions on websites0.6640.7090.656
Links with the brand name as text0.5110.6280.527
Searches for the brand name0.3520.4660.392
Domain authority (Domain Rating)0.2660.2850.326

The strongest link was with mentions on YouTube (about 0.74), while the link with the number of backlinks was described as "very weak". The figures are correlations: the closer to 1, the stronger the relationship.

Ahrefs itself warns that raising these metrics will not automatically raise visibility. They may simply be markers of an already strong brand. Still, the direction is clear: AI relies more on what others say about a company than on what the company says about itself. We cover this difference in more detail in SEO vs AI SEO.

Which 6 steps get you ahead?

1. Check that AI bots can access your site

According to OpenAI's documentation, a site that opts out of OAI-SearchBot is not shown in ChatGPT search answers, and a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to apply. Official documentation. If your competitor is open and you are blocked, the remaining steps will not help. The difference between the bots is explained in how ChatGPT sees your website.

2. Make sure your pages are indexed in Google

To appear as a link in Google's AI answers, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet. Google states there are no additional requirements or special optimizations beyond that. Google documentation. You check index status in Google Search Console.

3. Answer the questions your competitor has not answered

Take the question list from section two and check whether your site gives a direct answer to each one. Price, timeline, terms, a comparison table — precise facts that AI can quote easily. In the GEO study co-authored by Princeton researchers, adding statistics, quotations and source citations raised visibility by up to 40% under experimental conditions. That is a lab result, not a guarantee for every site.

4. Get present where your competitor is mentioned

Look at the list of links you collected: industry directories, review platforms, news sites, rankings, YouTube reviews. If your competitor is there and you are not, that is the first task. Use real information only: a company page, a genuine customer review, a useful expert comment.

5. Make your brand details identical everywhere

If your name, address, phone, opening hours and list of services differ between your site, maps and directories, AI cannot tell which version is right. Google also recommends that structured data match the visible text on the page and that your Business Profile stay up to date. For local businesses, our Google Business Profile guide walks through this step by step.

6. Re-measure every month with the same questions

Keep the questions, tools and number of runs unchanged — otherwise the results cannot be compared. Mark separately the questions where your share is growing and those where your competitor is still ahead.

You can do all of this yourself. If you are short on time, KATOV runs the check and builds the work plan as part of its AI SEO service.

What should you avoid?

  • Fake reviews and invented rankings. If they are exposed, AI may repeat that negative information instead.
  • Trusting a "guaranteed number one in ChatGPT" promise. Answers change every time; an honest provider does not offer that guarantee.
  • Relying on a single check. One appearance, or one absence, is not enough to draw a conclusion.
  • Dropping classic SEO. Google's AI answers rely on indexed pages, so the core work covered by an SEO service still applies.
  • Stuffing text with keywords. AI looks for a precise answer, not repeated phrases.

When do results show?

There is no guaranteed timeline. Technical blockers are fixed quickly: a robots.txt change is reflected in OpenAI's systems in about 24 hours. Outside mentions of a brand, however, do not appear overnight — they build up slowly and reach AI answers just as gradually.

So judge progress by the table from section two rather than by impression: how your share changed month to month, and for which questions. Several months of consecutive measurements are more reliable than one "lucky" answer.

Frequently asked questions

Can you rank number one in AI search?

There is no permanent number one. In SparkToro's research, the same list of brands came back in fewer than 1 in 100 runs of the same question. So you measure how often your brand is mentioned in answers, not its position.

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me?

The reason is usually off your site: more websites, directories, reviews and videos talk about your competitor. When Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands, visibility in AI answers was most strongly linked to how often a brand is mentioned across the web.

Can I check a competitor's visibility in AI answers for free?

Yes. Write 10–15 questions your customers ask, run each one several times in ChatGPT and Google, and log which brands and sources appear. That shows the overall picture without paid tools.

If my site has many backlinks, will I be ahead in AI answers too?

Not guaranteed. In the Ahrefs study, the number of backlinks was only very weakly linked to AI visibility, while brand mentions were much stronger. Links help, but they are not enough on their own.

How long does it take to see results in AI search?

Nobody can guarantee a timeline. OpenAI says a robots.txt change is picked up in about 24 hours, but outside mentions of a brand build up gradually. That is why you re-measure visibility every month with the same questions.
